Penang to Kuala Lumpur by private car: route, stops and booking checklist
By private car, Penang to Kuala Lumpur is about 350 km, almost all of it on the North-South Expressway. Online routing puts the drive at roughly 4 hours 20 minutes with no traffic and no stops, so plan on 4 to 5 hours door to door with a short break, and more for KLIA, which is about 400 km from George Town.
If you would rather be driven, our Penang to KL private transfer covers the whole trip at a fixed fare with tolls and fuel included. This guide explains the route, where to stop and what to check before you book, whether you drive or are driven.
The route
The quickest route from George Town, as OpenStreetMap routing plots it, leaves the island over the Penang Bridge, which PLUS operates as part of its expressway network, and joins the North-South Expressway (NSE) on the mainland. PLUS describes the NSE as spanning 748 km down the western side of Peninsular Malaysia. Heading south, the expressway runs through Perak and into Selangor before the turn-offs for Kuala Lumpur and, further south, KLIA.
Distance and time
- George Town to Kuala Lumpur city: about 350 km by road; about 4 hours 20 minutes of driving with free-flowing traffic, according to OpenStreetMap routing.
- George Town to KLIA: about 400 km; about 5 hours of driving on the same basis.
Those are best cases. Weekend and public-holiday traffic, roadworks and rain can all add time. PLUS publishes traffic updates through the PLUS App, its PLUSLine (1800-88-0000) and its PLUStrafik account on X, so check before you set off.
Tolls
The NSE is a toll road. PLUS lists the Touch 'n Go card, SmartTAG and RFID as the electronic toll collection systems on its expressways, so if you drive yourself, make sure your car has one of these set up with enough balance. On our private transfers, tolls are already included in the fare.
Where to stop
PLUS spaces its full R&R (rest and relaxation) areas every 80 to 100 km and smaller lay-bys every 25 to 50 km. R&Rs have food stalls, prayer rooms, petrol stations, toilets and shops; lay-bys have basic facilities. Two southbound R&Rs fall naturally on a Penang to KL run:
| Stop (southbound) | State | Facilities listed by PLUS |
|---|---|---|
| R&R Tapah, KM 331.6 | Perak | Petrol (Shell, BHP), food court, surau, toilets, nappy room, ATM, EV charging; listed as 100% cashless |
| R&R Ulu Bernam, KM 398.0 | Selangor | Petrol (Petronas), food court, surau, toilets, nappy room, ATM, EV charging |
KM figures are PLUS's expressway kilometre markers, not distances from Penang. Facilities can change; PLUS keeps a searchable list on its website.
On a four-to-five-hour drive, one proper break of 20 to 30 minutes is often enough, with a quick lay-by stop if children need it.
If you drive yourself
- Speed limits: PLUS asks drivers to follow the speed limit signs posted along its expressways.
- Breakdowns: PLUS advises pulling over to the emergency lane, switching on your hazard lights, getting safely behind the roadside barrier and calling PLUSLine on 1800-88-0000.
- Electric cars: both R&Rs in the table list EV charging, but check availability and connector type before you rely on them.
- Rental cars: our self-drive rentals exclude tolls and fuel (check the terms if you rent elsewhere), so budget for both and ask how tolls are paid when you collect the car.
Private car, self-drive or train?
A private car with a driver takes you from your door in Penang to your hotel or airport terminal with no change of transport, and you can rest the whole way. Self-drive gives you a car at the other end but means five hours at the wheel, tolls and fuel, and returning the car. The train is another option: KTMB's ETS runs between KL Sentral and Butterworth on the mainland side of Penang, so you would need to get to Butterworth first and onward from KL Sentral.
Booking a private transfer
With us, you enter your Penang pickup and your drop-off in Kuala Lumpur, KLIA or another town, and see the fare for each vehicle before you pay. Online bookings start in Penang: the pickup must be in Penang. We book each vehicle for up to 5 passengers, so there is room for luggage on a long trip.
Want a coffee stop or a meal on the way? Say so in the Special requests box at checkout. If you expect a long stop, add Extra Waiting Time at checkout in 30-minute blocks (RM25 each).
Booking checklist
- Flying from KLIA? Work back from your airline's check-in deadline, allow for the 5-hour best case plus traffic, and add a buffer. Tell us your terminal: KLIA Terminal 1 or KLIA2. KLIA is the same fixed fare as KL city with us.
- Exact addresses for pickup and drop-off, including the hotel name in KL.
- Passengers and luggage: count both, and book a second vehicle if a group will not fit.
- Stops: list any planned stop in Special requests.
- Payment and cancellation: chauffeur bookings are paid in full online. Cancel 48 hours or more before pickup for a full refund, 24 to 48 hours before for 50%; under 24 hours and no-shows are not refunded.
