The quickest answer: for a set price and no queue, pre-book a private car; for the lowest cost, take Rapid Penang bus 401E, 401 or 102 from the kerb outside arrivals. Grab and the airport taxi coupon sit in between. George Town is about 18 km from the airport by road, and Grab puts the average drive at around 35 minutes.

All four options work, and the right one depends on how many of you there are, how much luggage you have and what time you land. If you want the driver and the fare settled before you fly, see our Penang airport transfer page. Otherwise, here is how each option works, using the airport's and the operators' own published information.

By bus: Rapid Penang 401E, 401 and 102

Penang International Airport is served by Rapid Penang city buses. Malaysia Airports says the bus stop is at Curbside Lane 3, Level 1, Arrival Concourse. Three routes call at the airport and run on to George Town:

  • 401E runs between Weld Quay and Balik Pulau via Queensbay, stopping at Komtar and the airport. It is the most frequent of the three, every 15 to 20 minutes according to Rapid Penang's timetable.
  • 401 runs between Weld Quay and Teluk Kumbar, also via Komtar and the airport, about every 60 minutes.
  • 102 starts at the airport and runs to Teluk Bahang through Komtar, Gurney Drive, Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi, about every 75 minutes. Its first and last departures from the airport are listed as 6.00am and 11.35pm.

Fares are charged by distance. Rapid Penang's adult fare table starts at RM1.40 for the first 7 km and rises in stages to RM5.00 for 42 to 49 km. If you pay cash, have the exact fare ready, because the farebox does not give change, and keep the ticket until you get off. Check the fare chart on the poster at the stop before you board.

The bus is excellent value, but it is a city bus with many stops in between, so it suits travellers with a backpack or a small case more than a family with several suitcases.

By airport taxi: the coupon counter

Taxis from Penang International Airport work on a coupon system. According to Malaysia Airports, the charges are fixed by destination and you buy the coupon at the counter on Level 1, Arrival Concourse. The UK government's travel advice for Malaysia describes the same system at Malaysian airports: you pay a fixed price at a counter in the terminal rather than using a meter.

The advantage is that you need no app or data roaming, and the price is agreed before you get in. Coupon prices are set by the counter, so ask for the George Town fare when you get there. Expect to queue at busy times, especially when several flights land together.

By Grab

Grab operates airport rides at Penang. Grab lists the pickup point for arrivals as the Level 1 multi-level car park e-hailing pickup point; follow the in-app directions to find your driver. Grab shows an upfront fare before you book, and its airport page gives these averages for George Town: about 18 km, about 35 minutes and roughly RM30 to RM45.

Choose the vehicle size carefully. Grab describes JustGrab and GrabCar Plus as taking up to 4 passengers with 2 check-in bags, and the GrabCar 6-seater as up to 6 passengers, or 4 with extra luggage. If you are travelling with a pram, a golf bag or more cases than people, the standard car may not fit. Grab also offers advance booking for airport rides.

By private transfer

A private transfer means a car and driver booked for your group before you travel, at a fixed price per vehicle. With us, that is a Toyota Alphard or Vellfire with a chauffeur, for up to 5 passengers per vehicle, and the fare includes tolls and fuel. You see the price for each vehicle before you pay and pay online, so there is nothing to sort out after a long flight.

Two practical points. First, we do not track flights, so book the pickup for your scheduled landing time and add your flight number at checkout so it is saved with your booking. Second, the driver meets you at the pickup point unless you add Meet & Greet at checkout (RM30), in which case the driver waits with a name board in the arrival hall. If immigration or baggage claim is slow, Extra Waiting Time can be added in 30-minute blocks (RM25 each).

Which should you choose?

Travelling light and on a budget

Take the bus. Bus 401E is the most frequent, and every one of the three routes reaches Komtar. Have coins or small notes for the exact fare.

Two people with normal luggage

Grab or the taxi coupon are both straightforward. Grab gives you the fare up front in the app; the coupon counter suits you if you would rather not use an app on arrival.

A family, a group or lots of bags

Book a vehicle big enough in advance: a Grab 6-seater, or a private MPV transfer. With a private transfer the vehicle, the driver and the fare are all fixed before you land.

Landing late at night

Check the last bus times against your scheduled arrival, and remember that immigration and baggage claim take time. A pre-booked car removes the risk of missing the last bus.

Arrival checklist

  • Save your hotel's full address, including the street name, in your phone.
  • If you plan to take the bus, carry small change for the exact fare.
  • If you plan to use Grab, make sure your phone will have data when you land.
  • Count your bags as well as your people before you choose a vehicle size.
  • If you have pre-booked, keep the booking reference and your driver details to hand.
