How to hire a private driver in Penang for 4 hours
To hire a private driver in Penang for 4 hours, book hourly hire with a driver for your start time, say where you will be picked up, and list the stops you have in mind. With us, a chauffeur-driven Toyota Alphard or Vellfire is RM100 per hour, with a minimum of 4 hours, so four hours costs RM400 for the whole vehicle. Tolls and fuel are included, and the car waits for you between stops.
Four hours is our minimum hourly booking, and it is enough for a good half-day if you plan it well. This guide covers what you pay, how to plan the time, and what to put in your booking. To check prices or book, see our page on hiring a private driver in Penang by the hour.
What 4 hours with a driver includes
- The vehicle and a chauffeur for the whole time, for your group only. Each vehicle takes up to 5 passengers.
- Tolls and fuel for the hours you book, as our terms state for chauffeur, transfer and tour bookings.
- As many stops as fit in the time, in the order you choose.
Not included: entrance tickets, the Penang Hill funicular, meals and anything you buy along the way. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so it gets better value the more of you travel together.
Hourly driver or separate rides?
For one trip across town, a single Grab or taxi ride is simpler. Grab shows an upfront fare in the app, and the UK government's travel advice notes that taxis away from airports should use a meter. Once you have three or four stops, though, booking a new car each time adds waiting and repeated fares, and you carry everything with you.
| Hourly driver | Separate rides (Grab or taxi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Per hour for the vehicle, agreed before you pay | A new fare for every ride |
| Between stops | The car and driver wait for you | Book or hail a new car each time |
| Bags and shopping | Stay in the car | Travel with you |
| Best for | Several stops, a group, a tight schedule | One or two simple trips |
How to plan 4 hours so none is wasted
1. Choose one area, not the whole island
Four hours goes quickly if you criss-cross Penang. Pick one part of the island and group your stops there. Traffic in and around George Town can be slow at weekday peak times, so a start mid-morning or mid-afternoon usually helps.
2. Allow time at each stop
Count walking and queueing as well as driving. Popular sights can have queues at busy times, and the Penang Hill funicular in particular depends on the day: its operator says operating hours and ticket prices can change without notice, so check the official site on the day.
3. Put the plan in your booking
When you book, choose Within Penang or Outside Penang, enter your pickup and first destination, then list the other stops in the Special requests box at checkout. The driver then knows the shape of the day before arriving.
Three ways to spend 4 hours
George Town heritage
George Town is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008 together with Melaka as the "Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca". A half-day could take in the street art around Armenian Street, the Clan Jetties on Weld Quay, Fort Cornwallis and the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. The driver drops you close to each stop, so you spend your time walking the streets rather than looking for parking.
Temple and hill
Kek Lok Si in Ayer Itam, which the temple describes as one of the largest temple complexes in Southeast Asia, can be combined with Penang Hill. Ask the driver to drop you at the Penang Hill Lower Station for the funicular and collect you after.
Meetings, shopping or errands
For business visitors, four hours covers a couple of meetings across town with a car waiting outside each one. For shoppers, the car becomes a moving cloakroom: bags stay in the boot between stops.
Which vehicle, and where to start
Hourly hire is in a Toyota Alphard or Vellfire. Both are 7-seat MPVs with sliding doors; the Alphard is listed with captain seats and the Vellfire with lounge seats and ottomans. Our guide to Alphard vs Vellfire for a family trip explains the difference. Each shows its own price before you choose.
The pickup can be your hotel, home, office or another address in Penang. If you are arriving by air and want the afternoon on the island straight away, an hourly booking can start at the airport; just remember that we do not track flights, so leave a margin after your scheduled landing for immigration and bags before the hours begin. If you simply need to get from the airport to your hotel, a fixed-fare airport transfer is the better buy.
Booking checklist
- Pickup address, start time and the number of passengers.
- Your list of stops, in order, in Special requests.
- Large items: a pram, wheelchair or golf bags.
- A mobile number that works in Malaysia, so the driver can reach you.
- Whether you might want longer: it is simpler to book the hours you need at the start. Six hours costs RM600 in an Alphard. If you book 10 hours or more within Penang, 2 of them are free, so a 10-hour day is RM800.
Our cancellation terms: cancel 48 hours or more before the service for a full refund, 24 to 48 hours before for a 50% refund; cancellations under 24 hours and no-shows are not refunded.
