A good one-day plan with a private driver starts in George Town's heritage streets in the morning, heads inland to Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill around midday, and finishes on the north coast at Teluk Bahang and Batu Ferringhi. With your own car you can swap, shorten or drop any stop as the day goes. A 10-hour day within Penang costs RM800 for the whole vehicle with us.

The order below keeps driving short and saves the hill for after lunch, but it is only a starting point. When you book a Penang private tour with a driver, you set the stops and the pace; the driver follows your plan.

Morning: George Town heritage

Start where Penang's history is most visible. George Town is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with Melaka, as the "Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca" (2008). UNESCO describes George Town's streets of residential and commercial buildings as representing the British era from the end of the 18th century.

With a driver, you can be dropped at one end of the old town and collected at the other. Good stops for a morning include the murals around Armenian Street, the wooden stilt houses of the Clan Jetties on Weld Quay, Fort Cornwallis by the Esplanade and the blue-walled Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion on Lebuh Leith.

Allow two to three hours if you like to walk and take photos. Early is cooler and quieter, which matters in the tropics.

Late morning: Kek Lok Si

Kek Lok Si sits in Ayer Itam, inland from George Town. The temple says it has been built since 1891 and describes itself as one of the largest and finest temple complexes in Southeast Asia, with halls, pagodas, carvings and murals across the hillside. It is a place of worship, so dress respectfully, with shoulders and knees covered.

Early afternoon: lunch, then Penang Hill

Ask your driver for a lunch stop, then go up Penang Hill. The funicular leaves from the Penang Hill Lower Station. Penang Hill Corporation states that operating hours and ticket prices can be revised without prior notice, so check its official site on the day; queues can build at busy times. The driver drops you at the Lower Station and meets you there when you come down.

If the queue is very long, this is where a private car pays off: you can swap the order and come back later, or skip the hill and give the north coast more time.

Late afternoon: the north coast

Head to Teluk Bahang at the western end of the north coast. The Tropical Spice Garden lists its hours as 9am to 6pm Friday to Sunday and 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, with last admission one hour before closing, so arrive in good time on a weekday. It also runs guided walks daily at 9am and 11am, which suit a garden-first version of the day.

Finish with a stop at Batu Ferringhi, the beach strip on the way back towards George Town, before the driver takes you to your hotel or to dinner.

Make it your own

With children

Keep the heritage walk short, spend longer on the hill and the beach, and use the car as a cool base between stops. Tell us about a pram in the Special requests box.

Food first

Swap the garden for a long lunch and an evening of hawker food in George Town. The car can wait while you eat.

Half a day only

Take the morning plan, or the temple and hill, and book the 4-hour minimum. Our guide on hiring a private driver in Penang for 4 hours covers how to plan a shorter booking.

Before you book

  • Decide your must-see stops and list them, in order, in the Special requests box at checkout.
  • Choose Within Penang for an island day. The 10-hour free-hours offer, where it applies, is for trips within Penang.
  • Budget for entrance tickets, the funicular and meals, which are not included.
  • Check opening days and hours for anything you cannot miss.
  • Bring water, sun protection and something for the rain.
