How to get from Penang Airport to Batu Ferringhi with luggage
Baca dalam Bahasa Melayu: Cara ke Batu Ferringhi dari Airport Penang dengan bagasi
Batu Ferringhi is on the north coast, roughly 33 km by road from Penang Airport, and the road runs through the George Town side of the island. With luggage, the easiest options are a pre-booked private car or a Grab sized for your bags. On a budget, Rapid Penang bus 102 runs direct from the airport to the beach strip, but only about every 75 minutes.
The trip is one of the longer ones on the island, so it is worth thinking about bags before you land. If you would rather have the vehicle and fare fixed in advance, see our Penang Airport to Batu Ferringhi transfer. Below, each option is explained with the operators' own published details.
Your options compared
| Option | Changes | With big luggage | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus 102 | None, airport to Batu Ferringhi | Manageable with one case each | Distance-based bus fare |
| Bus 401E or 401, then 101 | One, at Komtar | Awkward with several cases | Two distance-based bus fares |
| Airport taxi | None | Depends on the taxi you are given | Fixed coupon price, ask at the counter |
| Grab | None | Pick a 6-seater for extra bags | Upfront fare in the app |
| Private MPV transfer | None, door to door | Space planned for bags | Fixed, from RM250 per vehicle |
By bus: route 102, or a change at Komtar
Direct: bus 102
Rapid Penang route 102 starts at Penang International Airport and ends at Teluk Bahang. Its published stop list runs through Komtar and Gurney Drive, then along Tanjung Bungah and the whole Batu Ferringhi strip, with stops such as Golden Sands, Long Beach, PARKROYAL Penang Resort and Hard Rock Hotel. The timetable shows a bus about every 75 minutes, with the first departure from the airport at 6.00am and the last at 11.35pm.
The bus stop is at Curbside Lane 3, Level 1, Arrival Concourse, according to Malaysia Airports. Fares are distance-based (from RM1.40 for the first 7 km, adult), and cash passengers need the exact fare because the farebox does not give change.
With a change: 401E or 401, then 101
If you have just missed a 102, routes 401E and 401 both stop at the airport and at Komtar. From Komtar, route 101 runs out to Teluk Bahang along the north coast, through Batu Ferringhi, and the timetable lists it every 10 to 12 minutes. The catch is the change: you get off, move your bags and board a second bus, paying a second fare.
A city bus works well with a backpack or one small case each. With large suitcases, a pram or several bags per person, the change at Komtar and a full bus at busy times make it hard work.
By airport taxi
Airport taxis use a coupon system: you buy a coupon at the counter on Level 1, Arrival Concourse, and the price is fixed by destination. Tell the counter you are going to Batu Ferringhi and give your hotel name. You do not choose the vehicle, so if you have a lot of luggage, mention it when you buy the coupon.
By Grab
Grab's pickup point for arrivals is the Level 1 multi-level car park e-hailing pickup point. Grab shows an upfront fare before you book. For luggage, the vehicle type matters most: Grab describes JustGrab and GrabCar Plus as taking up to 4 passengers with 2 check-in bags, and the GrabCar 6-seater as up to 6 passengers, or 4 with extra luggage. A family of four with four big cases should book the 6-seater rather than hope a standard car will do.
By private MPV transfer
A private transfer takes you door to door with no change and no queue: the driver takes you from the airport to your hotel's entrance on the strip. We book each Alphard or Vellfire for up to 5 passengers, which keeps room for suitcases in a 7-seat vehicle. Put large suitcases, golf bags, surfboards or a pram in the Special requests box at checkout so the driver knows what to expect. Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang are one fare area in our booking system, so the hotel you pick along the strip does not change the fare.
We do not track flights, so book your pickup for the scheduled landing time and add your flight number at checkout. If you would like the driver to wait in the arrival hall with a name board, add Meet & Greet at checkout (RM30). Extra Waiting Time can be added in 30-minute blocks (RM25 each).
Luggage tips for the beach run
- Count bags, not just people. Most problems on this route come from too many cases for the car, not too many passengers.
- Keep beach and day bags small. Pack a light bag you can keep on your lap so the big cases go straight in the back.
- Allow for the drive back. The airport run from Batu Ferringhi crosses the island again, so leave plenty of time before check-in closes, especially at weekday peak hours.
- Have your hotel's exact name. Bus stops on the strip are named after landmarks and hotels, so check which stop is nearest to yours before you set off, and give drivers the full hotel name.
Which option suits you?
Solo or a couple, light luggage, no rush: bus 102, timed around its 75-minute frequency, is the cheapest way to the beach. Two people with normal cases: Grab or the taxi coupon. Families and groups with big bags: a Grab 6-seater or a private MPV booked in advance, so the vehicle is the right size before you land.
